Program Information

Application & Selection Process

The selection process for this unique program will begin in the fall of each year with application information being sent to school resource officers/police officers. Officers will then identify potential CYCLE candidates and begin working on the application packets.

The student will be given the Student Application Form and the CYCLE Applicant Recommendation Form.  These forms should be completed and turned into the school resource officer/police officer that is nominating the student.  The school resource officer/police officer will then complete the Nomination Form and have the packet approved by the agency chief.  The completed packet must then be submitted to Virginia Tech.

The CYCLE SRO Technical Committee reviews each and every application to ensure that each student meets the attendance requirements and that all areas of Virginia are represented.  The Technical Committee then chooses 125 students to attend the program and notifies the nominating officer of their decisions.

The nominating officer will notify the students and their parents/guardians of their acceptance by early April of each year. At that time, the students and their parent/guardian will be given an acceptance packet that must be completed and returned by early May.

Cost

Attendance at CYCLE is cost-free to the student and his/her parents or guardians. The Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation recognized the need for the CYCLE program and works with corporations, civic groups, private grantors, police agencies, and citizens to raise the necessary funds to support this program.

Transportation and Lodging

All sessions of CYCLE are held on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Virginia Tech is located in scenic southwest Virginia, about 38 miles southwest of Roanoke. The campus borders U.S. 460 and downtown Blacksburg. Transportation to and from Virginia Tech's campus will be handled by each student's local police department. Detailed information will be provided in the acceptance packet.

Attendance and Participation

To receive the certificate of completion from the CYCLE program, a participant must be in residence from opening to closing ceremony. Participants are expected to attend all activities as set forth by CYCLE. These activities include but are not limited to scheduled classes, free time activities, and learning sessions. Participants are not allowed to leave campus unless special permission is obtained from the CYCLE program director. Special permission is granted in cases of emergency only. These guidelines are in place to ensure the participants receive the maximum amount of benefits offered by this program.
