Information

The Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation acknowledges the support police officers give their communities. In recognition of this, the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation has established the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation College Scholarship Program for dependant children of active police officers in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This scholarship is not available to dependant children of sheriff’s deputies, federal officers or civilian personnel working in police agencies. Prospective applicants should carefully read the guidelines and procedures and provide the necessary information on the appropriate application form, which is attached. Applications will be reviewed by a scholarship committee whose decision shall be final.

Scholarship recipients will be required to submit a brief questionnaire and picture of themselves. These items may be used on our website and/or in articles written about our scholarship program. Submission of your application implies consent to the use of your image and information as stated above.

Qualifications

For consideration for the VPCF Scholarship, each applicant must adhere to the following procedures:

Applicant must be a dependant child of an active police officer employed in the Commonwealth of Virginia. (Dependant children of sheriff’s deputies, federal officers or civilian personnel working in police agencies are not eligible.)
Applicant must be pursuing his/her first undergraduate degree.
Applicant must be currently enrolled or able to verify acceptance at a college or university.
Applicant must be enrolled or enrolling as a full-time student.

Application Procedures

All applicants must submit:

An original typed 2010 application. The application must be typed using black Times New Roman font, type size 11. Applications are available online at www.vapolicefoundation.org.
An original typed essay, 500 words or less, double-spaced. *Prior scholarship winners will need to answer an alternate essay question. (See “Submit an Essay” section of application)
An official high school transcript (original sealed document). Not required for home-schooled students.
SAT and/or ACT scores.
Letter verifying acceptance to a college or university. (For high school students only.)
Applicants that are home-schooled must also submit:
Official copy of the Notice to Home Instruct or Religious Waiver Request.
High School Curricula.

Applicants currently enrolled in a college or university must also submit:

An official college transcript (original sealed document).
Letter verifying continued eligibility of full-time enrollment at a college or university.

All application packages, including supporting documentation, must be postmarked by April 2, 2010, and sent to: Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation; 1606 Santa Rosa Road, Suite 134; Richmond, VA 23288.

Judging Procedure
This is a needs based scholarship. All personal information and scholastic information will be used for verification purposes only. Applications will be judged on the following criteria: (1) Demonstrated need; (2) Academic achievement; (3) Community/civic achievements; and (4) Essay.

Please note:

The application package may not be sent by electronic means.
Handwritten applications and essays will not be considered.
Applicants must use the 2010 application form. Applications submitted using a form from a previous year will not be considered.
Applicants not submitting a complete application package will not be considered.
Application packages postmarked after the deadline date will not be considered.
Employment information for sponsoring police officers will be verified for all finalists.
Finalists must be prepared to appear personally for an interview, if necessary.
