All training programs/seminars listed below will be pre-approved for DCJS in-service credit and Partial In-service Credit (PIC) forms will be distributed at the close of each program. Because class sizes are limited, applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Early registration is encouraged!


New Chiefs/Deputy Chiefs Training School

Natural Bridge Hotel; Natural Bridge, VA

march 18-20, 2008

This three-day course is a “must” for those individuals who have recently been appointed as a chief of police, deputy chief, or one who functions as the chief executive in the absence of the chief. The curriculum focuses on issues central to running a successful police agency, including such issues as ethics, personnel issues, financial management, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), records management, and political environments. This is a great opportunity to network with other new chiefs and seek assistance from other police executives. Legal credit is included in this training. The application deadline for this training is February 29, 2008.


First Line Supervisors Training School

Natural Bridge Hotel; Natural Bridge, VA

Session 1: April 8-10, 2008 (Application Deadline is March 7, 2008)

This program is designed to assist officers in their transition to their new role as supervisor. The program has been designed for those newly appointed as supervisors or those soon to be promoted, and is most applicable to individuals who have had little or no prior supervisory training. Basic supervisory concepts will be presented that will serve as a foundation to enable each supervisor to identify some of the most critical components of supervision. Legal credit is included in this training.


Institute for Leadership in Changing Times (ILCT)

Virginia Tech; Blacksburg, VA

Session 1: June 15-20 & September 16-18, 2008
Session 2: July 13-18 & September 23-25, 2008

What motivates your staff? What leadership style works well in your organization? Designed for individuals occupying a first-line or mid-management level position in a public or private sector business or law-enforcement agency, the ILCT is an education-based leadership program designed to develop creative thinking and leadership skills. The curriculum draws upon a variety of subjects related to leadership in successful organizations today. Curriculum topics include motivation, self leadership, situational leadership, developing followership, managing multi-generation workplaces, building healthy teams, organizational communication, barriers to success, and other leadership issues. This program is open to first line supervisors/mid-managers with demonstrated leadership potential and who have completed a basic supervision program. This is a residential program, and all participants will be required to stay on campus and must commit to the entire educational process at both the summer and fall schedule. The application deadline for both sessions is May 16, 2008.


Media Relations Seminar

Homewood Suites Hotel, Glen Allen, VA

June 26-27, 2008

Dealing with the media can make anyone’s palms sweat. At the least, it can be challenging to get your message across succinctly and effectively. As news channels now offer 24-hour coverage and compete to fill air time, more local stories may receive national media attention. Are you prepared? This insightful two-day seminar will help you employ techniques to effectively communicate, offer tips to project a good image, and provide techniques to be ready for the unexpected. The session, led by Jim Vance, will provide valuable information in working with the media, ranging from routine matters to high profile and emergency situations. This seminar is geared for the chief executive, agency spokesperson, or anyone responsible for media issues or called upon to interact with the media. The application deadline for this training is May 30, 2008.


Professional Executive Leadership School (PELS)

University of Richmond; Richmond, VA

23rd Session: September 8-12; October 6-10; November 3-6, 2008
24th Session: January 12-16; February 9-13; and March 9-12, 2009

What makes a great leader? What is the difference between management and leadership? The Professional Executive Leadership School (PELS) is an intensive three-week, liberal arts-based educational experience that focuses on the study of leadership. PELS is geared for chief executive officers and managers, and candidates from the private sector, public safety, and government agencies are invited to apply. Faculty members from the University of Richmond teach the classes, providing a wide array of topics from the liberal arts perspective. Case studies and topical issues are also explored. Legal credit is included in this training. An open enrollment process is utilized for this program.
