The purpose of the Virginia Internal Affairs Investigators Association (VIAIA) is to develop and establish professional standards of performance and integrity for Internal Affairs investigators; to provide training designed to bring about professional growth and development; to present a forum for discussion of common problems and current court decision; to gather and disseminate information regarding improved administrative and technical practices; to assist law enforcement agencies in the establishment and continued development of Internal Affairs investigative units; and to foster law enforcement cooperation and the exchange of information and experience among Internal Affairs investigators throughout the State of Virginia.

 

The Virginia Internal Affairs Investigators Association is non-political and shall not be used for the dissemination of partisan principals nor for the promotion of the candidacy of any person seeking public office or preferment. No candidate for nomination or election to public office shall hold any elective office or any appointive remuneration office in this Association.

2011 VA Internal Affairs Investigators Association - Fall Conference

Homewood Suites; Henrico, VA

October 4-5, 2011

 

The Virginia Internal Affairs Investigators Association (VIAIA) has partnered with the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation (VPCF) to present the 2011 VIAIA Annual Conference. The conference has been scheduled to be held October 4-5, 2011, at the Homewood Suites hotel in Glen Allen, VA.

 

Registration:

There are a limited number of seats available; registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Registration deadline is September 5, 2011. Early registration is encouraged! To register, please complete the registration form below.

The registration fee is $243 and includes lodging for the night of October 4th; training materials; welcome reception; break services; and DCJS Partial In-Service Credit. The registration fee without lodging is $145.

 

Program Information:

Conference check-in will begin at 11:00 a.m. with classes beginning promptly at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4th. The conference will close at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5th. Dress code is business casual, (collared shirts, no jeans, closed-toe shoes). 


Certification:

The training will be pre-approved for DCJS in-service credit and Partial In-service Credit (PIC) forms will be distributed at the close of training. Legal and Cultural Diversity credit will be included in this training.

 

Lodging:

All lodging is single occupancy and includes buffet breakfast and buffet dinner. Lodging arrangements for the night of October 4th at the Homewood Suites Hotel in Henrico, Virginia, are made by the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation. Cancellation Policy:

If cancellation is received before September 5, 2011, you will be eligible for a partial refund, but will be assessed an $80 scheduling fee. No refund will be granted for any withdrawal notice received on or after September 5, 2011. No-shows are not eligible for refunds. Qualified substitutions are gladly accepted with prior approval.

The Virginia Internal Affairs Investigators Association has partnered with the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation to provide an Internal Affairs Investigators basic training school.

Membership Information

To become a member of the Virginia Internal Affairs Investigators Association, please contact Major Jerry Stokes (jerome.stokes@lynchburgva.gov).

 

  • Active Membership shall consist of sworn municipal, county, state, federal and other law enforcement agency members who conduct internal affairs investigations and/or provide direct review of the investigations. Active membership shall also include Retired law enforcement personnel, and support staff of the various offices of Internal Affairs or Professional Standard offices. The retired law enforcement personnel and support shall have the privilege of voting and may hold any office with the exception of President or Vice President. Candidates for membership shall be approved by the Executive Committee or by vote of the general membership at a regular meeting
  • Associate Membership shall consist of individuals who have all the privileges of Active Membership, except they shall not have the privilege to vote. Those eligible to apply for Associate Membership shall include the following: Full-time police attorneys, members of criminal justice training academies and DCJS and members of the Attorney General's office. Associate membership shall not be extended to personnel engaged in for-hire services such as merchant patrols, private detectives, security guards and similar services. Associate Membership shall be approved by the Executive Committee or by vote of the general membership at a regular meeting.
  • Honorary Membership shall consist of those persons who have contributed substantially to the improvement and advancement of the Association. Nomination of persons for Honorary Membership shall be submitted by an active or associate member to the Executive Committee for review and approval. Honorary members shall be appointed for life, unless excluded from membership by the Executive Committee or by vote of the general membership at a regular meeting. Honorary Members shall be extended the same privileges as Associate Members.

*Only active members have voting privileges and departments/agencies are only allowed one vote per department on issues.
